Description of "The Invitation”
This is my first collage from my first workshop in 2003. The Invitation is about becoming more than I thought possible. It’s about healing my relationship with myself, learning to create in a new way, and stepping into a teacher/facilitator role.
I had to release old “shadowy” ways of thinking (Who am I?), represented by the black paper, and ultimately allow the light to shine up through the darkness. The yellow sun represents my strong will and desire to change, the red rose “growth”, and the Anais Nin quote -- which lies half in the sun, half in the shadow -- the struggle within me between the old stuck energy versus the new forward movement. I glued the structured lined paper in the center of the collage symbolizing my internal voice of control. All around this center, however, are ways to soften this controlling mind and allow my “headwork” ultimately to be turned upside down. While searching through the collage supplies, I was drawn to the quote: “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” I glued this in the center of the emerging light of the new.
The backside of the collage represents the answer to this question. From a place of trust and faith, I could explore “opening to different and new ways to create.” This is symbolized by the outstretched hands, coming up from the shadow into the light, going forth, and trusting that I couldn’t fail. The hands appear to be coming up through the waters of faith – silhouetting my need to move through my emotions. Through creating this visual representation of my deepest desires, Silent Collage Practice was born.
